About Jami, your pediatric nurse and baby photographer
Jami has always had an intense love for all things baby. She helped raise her brothers, always had a baby in her arms at family gatherings, and has worked as a pediatric nurse for over 28 years. Jami's first birthday and cake smash photography now combines her love of babies and her creative design expertise to provide you with a fun and enjoyable experience celebrating your little one! With a keen understanding of child development and effective communication, she crafts the best portraits that beautifully capture your one year old's personality traits at this fun stage that (let's be honest) cell phones do not always catch. The beautiful thing about hiring Jami as your photographer is that she can capture those expressions and moments that a cell phone will not!

What my cake smash photography in Salt Lake county clients are saying

Frequently asked questions about cake smash photography
Where are cake smash photography sessions done?
Cake smash photography sessions take place in my photography studio near Salt Lake City, Utah. After booking a cake smash photo session, you will receive details about the location and address of the studio.
When should I book cake smash photos?
I recommend contacting me when your baby is 8-9 months old in order to adequately schedule and plan for a cake smash photography session. I only book a certain number of photography sessions per month, as I also still work as a pediatric nurse.

When will a cake smash or birthday photo session take place?

If you would like the photos from your baby's cake smash session back in time for their 1st birthday, I suggest that we do the cake smash photo session about 3-4 weeks before your baby's birthday. However, I have had parents want to wait and do their baby's cake smash session on or just after their first birthday. It's up to you!

How do I prepare for my baby's cake smash photo studio session?

When you book a cake smash session, you will receive my preparation guide that will walk you through how to prepare for your cake smash photos. From what to wear, what to bring, and what to expect, the guide is comprehensive and will help you relax knowing all of the tiny details are taken care of!

Do I need to bring outfits for my baby?
I recommend no more than 2 outfits for your baby during this session. One for the classic portraits and one for the birthday backdrop. You are welcome to bring your own outfits, but you will also have access to my client closet that includes some baby and toddler outfits. I am happy to help suggest clothing that will photograph well.

What happens during a cake smash photo session?

Cake smash sessions start with a quick 5-10 minutes on a classic studio portrait backdrop. Then we move on to the birthday backdrop and get some portraits there. I have all kinds of little chairs, baskets, and props to help keep those one year olds that are on the move in place, but I also like to capture them crawling, walking, or whatever milestone they are mastering at the moment. Then we introduce the cake and let your baby explore the new world of sugar! Some babies dig right in, and some babies are a little more hesitant. Once they are done getting messy, you will have the option to do a splash bath in my tiny tub. This allows the baby to splash a little and have fun, as well as clean up any residual frosting. The total session usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

How much does a cake smash photography session cost?

My sessions start with a session fee that varies depending on the type of cake smash you choose. The session fee includes the time and talent of the photographer, the setup and cleanup, a beautiful and delicious smash cake, and a small print credit. This does not include the unedited or edited digital images. You may use your print credit to purchase digital images, prints, albums, or products. Digital images are $25 each. Most of my clients spend $500-1000 on a full cake smash session with their products. Contact me for full pricing info!
Why is cake smash photography so expensive?

Cake smash photography requires many hours planning and preparing for the session. Creating the perfect backdrop for your baby's first birthday is an art that I absolutely love, but it does take time. Predesigned quality backdrops (with props printed onto it) are expensive, usually between $250-400 each. I have invested thousands into my photography education and equipment to be able to photograph babies. The cake smash photo session also includes a beautifully decorated cake designed by my wonderful baker to match your cake smash theme. There is a lot of cleanup required both before (to ensure my studio is safe and sanitised for your baby) and after a cake smash session. My images are hand retouched to deliver you high quality artwork, which takes time. If you are looking for a cheap photographer that throws a filter on each image and delivers the same day, I am not the photographer for you.
Where is your portrait studio located?

My cake smash photography sessions are done in my studio in Sandy, near Salt Lake City, Utah. FYI - The pin below is not correct. The exact address will be shared once you book a cake smash photo session.
What if my baby won't cooperate for a cake smash photo session?

I have many cake smash photography clients that are amazed at the beautiful photos I get, even when their baby was crawling or running away, or less than cooperative (because, let's face it, what toddler is perfectly cooperative??). I am very good with babies and children, and I even have a few tricks up my sleeve! I promise to do everything in my power to capture beautiful photos worthy of placing on your walls! As long as you follow my prep guide and make sure your baby is well rested and fed, we should be able to get beautiful photos.

What if my baby has food allergies?

There are plenty of options if you baby cannot have sugar, gluten, dairy, eggs, etc. I even have done different "smash" setups (watermelon, spaghetti, steak, the possibilities are endless!). I also have a faux cake if you truly want the look of a cake smash setup without the mess or the sugar.

Can family be included in the cake smash photos?

My studio is quite small, and due to the amount of space a cake smash setup takes, there is no room for an additional full size backdrop for family. If you would like to get in with your baby in front of the birthday backdrop, we can make that work for a a photo or two, but if you would like full family photos, please consider booking a separate family photography session.
